John Hartland Memorial Fund

John Hartland founded Monmouth School for Girls Rowing Club in 1992 having previously been Master in Charge of Rowing at Monmouth School for Boys.

John with his daughter Kate Callaghan coached girls to gold medal success at National Schools Regatta, National Championships and Women’s Henley as well as being the inspiration behind girls who achieved International honours rowing for both Wales and Great Britain.  Mr Hartland, as he was fondly known to the many girls that he coached over the years, not only encouraged those that won medals but encouraged all girls who wanted to try and experience rowing and supported them to achieve their potential.  He leaves behind a legacy from which many girls have obtained not only sporting talents but also learnt vital life skills including team work, camaraderie and determination.

John sadly passed away in January 2021 and we have set up this fund in his memory.  We hope that those who benefitted from John’s wisdom and inspiration over the years would like to contribute to support a girl at Monmouth School for Girls with some of the additional costs associated with rowing, providing the opportunity for them to have the same experiences that Mr Hartland provided to so many.

A memorial event to celebrate John Hartland’s life is being planned for later in 2021 when restrictions allow and hope many past rowers will be able to attend.
