Oliver secures his spot in the National Children’s Orchestra for the second time!

December 4, 2023

Congratulations are in order for our year 8 student, Oliver M, who has been awarded a coveted spot in the National Children’s Orchestra. A dedicated double bassist, Oliver showcased his musical talent during the orchestra auditions held over the summer holidays, and we are delighted to announce his success in securing a position.

The National Children’s Orchestra is a forum where the best young musicians from across the UK come together to flourish through music. The orchestra drives wellbeing and happiness through fostering the creative empowerment of musicians, while supporting their aspirations and growth.

Oliver will attend a week-long intensive music course during the upcoming Easter holidays culminating in a public concert at the Lighthouse Theatre in Poole. This will be followed by a second course during the summer, concluding with a concert in Bristol.

However, this isn’t the first time Oliver has been awarded a place in the prestigious orchestra! In fact, he was awarded a place last year too. A testament to his achievement, we are pleased to share a photo below, capturing Oliver after his performance last year at the Portsmouth Guildhall.

David Lawson, Director of Music and organist at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School said, “Oliver is a very hard-working young person and a fine musician.  He plays in a number of groups in school and sings in the chapel choir.  He is also keenly interested in live steam engines.  His experience in the NCO is of huge benefit to him and to us too as he brings that experience back to school with him”.

Please join us in wishing Oliver the very best in his orchestral endeavours, and we hope he has amazing fun at his upcoming course!
